WHERE GOOD RESEARCH BECOMES GOOD WRITING

As an editor I specialize in academic texts written in English by non-native speakers, primarily within the social sciences. Given my fields of research expertise, I also edit for architecture, urban studies, urban planning, and related disciplines. My aim with this work is to facilitate the distribution of scientific research to reach the widest audience possible.

My academic editing experience includes journal articles (pre and post review), doctoral theses, book chapters and full monographs, magazine copy, website content, grant and book proposals, reviews, application materials, and institutional documents.

I have worked with PhD candidates, professors, students, and practicing professionals in Chile, Sweden, the US, and other parts of Europe and South America since 2012.

Academic Editing

Language, Style, Structure, and Peer Review

with a focus on non-native English speakers

EDITING

As an academic editor, I focus on Language, Style, and Structure. My aim is to improve the overall clarity and flow of a document, while maintaining the author's voice. In addition, I track internal consistency errors and may suggest content changes (essentially acting as a peer reviewer). While all texts are checked for indisputable errors, I also help to ensure a concise, focused, and native-sounding text through alterations to the writing style and structure. Listed below are the most common improvements I make:

grammar | spelling | punctuation | sentence structure | word choice | redundancy | tense | paragraph flow | wordiness | ambiguity | transitions | capitalization | technical inconsistencies

Although I prefer to shape texts for an American English readership, I also edit journal articles and other short texts intended for British English publications.

SPECIALIZED FIELDS

Social Sciences | Architecture | Urban Planning | Urban Studies

While native English is requisite for editing English academic texts, it is not sufficient. Given my research and professional background, I have the knowledge required of the specified fields to make your manuscript clear, focused, and readable, so you can feel confident sending it for publication. However, if you have an article in another scientific or technical field and are interested in my work, I would be happy to review it! I have experience with legal and medical articles as well.

PRICING

Editing is priced by the hour. Before getting started, I will review your document(s) to estimate a time frame. We will discuss your intended audience/publication and any areas of focus, depending on your aims or those of the publisher. Then I will edit the first few pages of your document to get a sense of your style and common errors. Lastly, I will quote a price range based on an estimated maximum and minimum number of hours the project will take to complete. If you agree to the estimate, payment is due when the project is finished.

For smaller projects that may take less than an hour, such as letters or abstracts, I charge a minimum fee of 1 hour.

Please contact me for current rates. If your institution does not reimburse you for editing, I am happy to negotiate a price.

I accept payments via local bank transfer in the following currencies: CLP, SEK, GBP, EURO*

Payments in USD and other currencies accepted via PayPal or Wise**

*EU clients are subject to VAT.

**You must have either a PayPal or Wise (formerly Transferwise) account to pay using these services. Payments from currencies other than those listed above must be made in USD via Paypal or Wise. Currency conversion will incur a small fee.

ESTIMATED SPEEDS

Editing times vary depending on the amount of editing the document requires (i.e., how well the original document is written) and the level of editing you would like (i.e., correction of indisputable errors vs. structural/stylistic improvements). The estimates below reflect averages based on prior projects and may help you get a sense of the speed and price.

Heavy editing = 2-3 pages/hour (up to 1000 words/hour)

Light editing = 4-6 pages/hour (1000-1500 words/hour)
